LATHE CUT WTF?
People have a lot of questions about lathe cuts so I wanted to pass on some info from Precarian Cuts - the facility that is cutting these records and also pass on some personal experiences I have had with lathe cut records.
From Precarian Cuts: "Note that this Lathe Cut record was made one at a time, in real time, by an actual person from plexiglass using an experimental process and 70 year old machines. It is not a pressed record and may have more surface noise or an occasional light distortion in some frequencies and will sound somewhat different than the original masters. The volume will also be lower than a modern "post-loudness-war" record, so pump up the volume. Lathe cuts are not standard pressed records and do not sound like them, if you are after an audiophile record you will not achieve that with lathe cuts. We also listen to every single record that gets made to ensure it is up to snuff. These records do not always play well on all turntables without a weighted tonearm. Sometimes the needle will get caught in between the grooves and sound awful. You can gently nudge the needle back into the bottom of the groove, which will fix the problem. We repeat, if the album does not sound right, the needle is most likely NOT in the groove. "
My Experience: I'll be honest to say initially I had mixed experiences with lathe cut records, but I've come to realize the the majority of issues I had were due to my turntable and not the lathe record. The grooves on the lathes are not as deep and therefore more affected by things like static and vibrations, both which are major issues on my current stereo set up. When I set up a second turntable in a different part of the house, there were no issues. It was absolutely my turntable and not the record. Sure there is always the chance of a flaw in the plastic itself (i try to cull those out if I catch one) but if you are having issues, chances are it may be with your gear. I am not deterred at all, and neither should you. If you read this far, thanks for being so attentive.

A dreamy, beguiling, nostalgic dungeon synth quest through the shires. But, it's so much more than that. The LP incorporates some unique key changes, field recordings and a lot of Mort Garson style synth work. It sometimes reminds me of old 70's PG horror soundtracks. The record is addictive melancholy inspiration. The ideal music for accompanying the dawning morning of an epic adventure. brantly
I love the mix of quiet melancholy and soaring wonder here. Listening makes me feel like I am looking up at the night sky on another world, watching impossible boreal colors dance along the horizon while tall trees sway in the keening wind, and gray-cloaked figures add their own long-dead voices to the joyful lament.
